Before you Adopt To adopt a dog from GSRT, you must fill
out an adoption application, including one veterinary and two personal
references. We will then arrange to meet with you and complete
a home-visit. All dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated,
microchipped, and given a health check prior to being placed in their new home.
The dogs will also be evaluated to ensure a suitable match between family
and dog, and that the dog will have a loving and safe home.
GSRT has some adoption policies in
place before we will place our rescue dogs. The policies are
what we have found through our own experiences and the experience
of other rescues, are what really is best for the dogs and for prospective
families. We realize that some wonderful homes will have to
be passed over for these reasons, and we do regret that, and hope
that you can understand why they are so important.
We do not place dogs in homes where
children are under the age of eight.
We do not place dogs in homes without
a fenced area attached to your home. The fence must be a minimum
of five feet high, to ensure the safety of the dogs. Wooden
or mesh fences (not invisible fences) are both fine, but they must
be secured for safety. If you are willing to adopt a senior
dog, or possibly a dog with special needs, we might possibly be able
to work with this requirement.
We do not adopt to homes with cats
or small dogs.
We do not adopt to homes with intact
dogs, unless the dog is intact for a medical reason that your vet will
confirm.
If you are currently in a rental situation,
we will require landlord permission to adopt a dog, specifically a
German Shepherd Dog, and will call to confirm this; unfortunately
not all landlords love our breed as much as we do.
We adopt dogs to the southern
Ontario area, to ensure that we can meet with you, and do a home visit.
All family members, including dogs, must meet the foster dog prior to
proceeding with adoption. If you live outside our area, please feel free to contact us by phone
or e-mail and we would be happy to refer you to another rescue organization
that would be closer to you.
We realize some people may feel these
policies are overly restrictive, and will advise us that many breeders
do not use the same criteria. We feel that if the same criteria
were used more often, many of these sweet dogs would not land
in pounds in need of rescue. We hope you can understand that
all of our policies are for our dogs' safety and wellbeing.
Terms of Adoption
Cost
The adoption donation for most
German Shepherd Dogs is $350,which
helps to partially defray the veterinary
and fostering expenses we incurred in rescuing and caring for the dog.
The donation for Senior dogs and Special Needs dogs is $150. All
German Shepherd Dogs will have been neutered or spayed, given all
necessary inoculations including a Rabies shot, microchipped, heartworm tested,
stool tested for parasites, and given other medical treatment needed
for problems that GSRT is aware of and can treat, before adoption.
Return policy
If, for any reason, the adoption is not satisfactory for the
German Shepherd Dog or for adoptive owner, GSRT requires that the dog
be returned, at adoptive owner’ s expense, to GSRT as soon as we are
able to place the dog in foster care. The dog may not be sold or given
to a new owner. GSRT reserves the right to take back this dog if it is
ever neglected, improperly cared for, or allowed to become a nuisance
to others.
Care
The adoptive owner agrees to provide proper shelter, high
quality food as advised by GSRT, and proper medical care including
annual heartworm tests, and agrees that this dog will not run free
without supervision, be chained out, be allowed around children under
14 years without adult supervision present, be allowed to ride loose
in the back of a truck, or be used for guarding purposes. Failure to
comply with these
terms will require that the dog be surrendered immediately and
returned to German Shepherd Rescue Toronto, without refund.
Your dog will need yearly boosters for Rabies in accordance with
provincial regulations.
Your dog must have
an annual heartworm test and your veterinarian may recommend a
preventative heartworm program for at least six (6) months of the year
in Ontario. Please discuss this with your vet so you can make an
informed decision, and we also suggest a holistic veterinarian to care
for your companion.
GSRT requires that adopter enroll in an obedience training
program with your adopted Rescue dog to increase the bond between you,
and to be sure you know how to teach your dog basic pet obedience
exercises and how to be a good canine citizen.
